Phone: 940-720-5059

Texas is one of the most well known states throughout the United States. Texas has always been known for the famous Texas Rangers which is famous for law enforcement. However times have changed, but people still want to be police officers. There are lots of reasons people become police officers. Two of the biggest reasons are:

a) they want to help prevent crime in their state and community

b) they have seen movies and television shows that glorify becoming a police officer.

Now there are more reasons that people forget about, including job stability. As we all know there will always be a need for police officers. The other less known reason that people want to become police officers is because of compensation.

There is no salary that will be enough for what police officers do. They put their lives on the line every time they go to work. Every time they put their uniform on, they know there will be people that hate them just because they are wearing that uniform. Police work is not easy or safe, but is a necessary job. Now the average salary for police officers in the United States is $53,000, which is a decent salary. However you can also rest assured that you will get plenty of overtime, including court on your days off, and paid jobs like speed enforcement and drug interdiction and other assignments like this. You will be able to make good money as a police officer.

Outlook For The Future

Now if you want to be a police officer, but you are not sure when, the good thing is you do have time. The growth for hiring of police officers in the state of Texas is expected to be at about 17%, which is great growth, no matter what type of job it is for. As one can see, if you are worried about stability, you have no need, because there is a great outlook for the future.

Minimum Requirements

Now as one might expect, there is a lot of competition to become a police officer in Texas, so there are certain minimum requirements that must be met, before you can even enter into the process. First you must be a United States citizen. Second you must be 21 years or older. Third, you must have a high school diploma, or GED. Lastly you must have a valid drivers license. Now these do not get you hired into the police department, this just gets you in the door.

Required Examinations

Now if you make it past the minimum requirements, then there will be examinations you will have to take to make sure you are going to be able to make it through the training. First and foremost because police work is a physical job, they are going to have you undergo a physical examination to make sure you have no limitations for your physical training. The next examination you can look at taking will be a mental examination. Police work by it’s nature is very stress filled, and it is not a job for the weak minded, so before a police department will hire some-one they want to make sure that you are going to be mentally able to handle the job. This is not anything bad against people who can not handle it, because this job is not for everyone. Now the next examination goes without saying, but you are going to have to go through a drug screening. You will have to come back negative for using drugs of any type. Obviously, police departments can not have officers who are drug users. Now if you pass all of these examinations, then the next thing to come up is the background investigation.

Background Clearance

A background investigation is important for any job. A person has to remember that a company is going to hire you to represent them, so they want to make sure that they have the right type of person for the job, and the same holds true for police officers. Now for police officers it is even more important because a police officer carries a gun and can hold people’s lives in their hands, so they must make sure the person they are hiring is quality people. In Texas they will do a fingerprint check to make sure the potential candidate is clean of major criminal charges. For starters you must be able to operate a motor vehicle, if you can not operate a motor vehicle you can not be a police officer. Second you must be allowed to carry a firearm and ammunition, if you are not allowed to carry a gun you can not be a police officer. Third you can not have been convicted of any family violence cases, no domestic violence. If you have been convicted of domestic violence you can not be a police officer. Lastly you can not have been convicted of any Class B misdemeanor or higher charge. If you are going to be arresting people for serious charges, they do not want their officers to have their same charges on their record. If you meet all of these requirements and clear the examinations and background you will need to attend a police academy.

Cost And Length of Police Academy

Now the good thing is that if you are looking for a police academy to attend in Texas there are at least 100 that are approved by the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement, so you have plenty to pick from. However you do need to understand that there is a commitment you are making when joining a academy. First of all the average time frame of most police academies is 18 weeks long. The average tuition to attend the academy is $4500, however that does not include everything. You will need to buy, a duty belt, handgun, speed loaders or magazines, handcuffs and flashlight just to name a few items. Once you complete the academy then you will take a written examination to be certified in the state of Texas to work as a police officer. Now in some cases police departments will pay for a cadet to go through the academy and will take care of their equipment, but if not it falls on you.

Academy Life

Now as a cadet enters into the police academy, one thing is certain, if they make it to the end they will be physically and mentally stronger then then they have ever been. They will go through very tough training, and will be required to do push-ups, sit-ups, running and weight lifting. Most of the time you will be in the academy from 8 in the morning to five in the evening. However there will be times when you will be in the academy in the evening as well. There will be a lot of training that you will go through, including learning the traffic and criminal code, high speed pursuit driving and defensive driving and of course firearms training to name just a few. The whole goal behind the police academy is to make sure you are prepared when you graduate and hit the streets and they will do everything they can to give you the best chance to be successful.
