A lot of people have dreams of becoming a police officer. The reasons that people choose to become police officers may vary from case to case.

In some cases people want to make a difference in their community and help society. Sometimes they believe what they see in the movies and television and believe it is a glamorous profession.

Not a job for everyone

Even though movies make a person think being a police officer is a fun job, but the sad part is that a lot of police officers deal with a lot of stress day in and day out.

The truth is police officers see people at their weakest and their worse. A lot of times police officers take that home with them and it can even effect their home lives. That is why being a police officer is not for everyone.

Tests and exams

If you are thinking of becoming a police officer in the state of Nevada, there are certain things you will need to know and be prepared to do. First and foremost, you must be a citizen, you need to be twenty one years old and have a high school diploma or GED.
Now if you meet those conditions then you can expect that you will have to take a written examination, and the physical fitness test. Now if you are serious about trying out for the police department, you want to start working out now.

Medical, Psychological and background

Now if you make through those steps, then you can expect that you will be scheduled for a medical evaluation, which will also be followed by a psychological, and a background investigation. Now the background investigation is going to be very intense, because they will talk to your family, friends, relatives and co-workers. They will also give you a drug screening to make sure you do not have anything that could comprise their police departments.

Oral boards

Now if a candidate has made it this far, then they can expect to go before an oral board. An oral board will consist of a group of officers that will ask the candidate several different questions. The oral board is a very tense and stressful part of the hiring process and is designed to see how a candidate handles the process. A good way to look at this part of the process is that it is a group interview.

Length of the police academy and compensation

Now if a candidate gets hired then the next step is to enter the police academy. Now you can expect to be in the police academy about 20 weeks in duration. Now you can expect that some of the people that enter the academy will not be there at graduation. Now when you graduate the academy you can expect to make approximately $35,000 which is not bad for a rookie officer.

Academy life

Now once you enter the academy you can expect certain things. First an foremost, the instructors are going to be hard core, because they need to weed out the weak ones, because police work is really not designed for the week. They will break you down to build you back up.

One of the first ways they will break you down is physical training. You can expect a hard core intense series of physical training, including, push-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks and lots and lots of running. You will also through classroom instruction on things like the criminal code, and traffic codes. These are extremely important, because officers néed to know the proper charges when they charge people.

Outside training

Now besides inside training there are two more important and vital areas of training you can look forward too. First is firearms instruction. In today’s society a police officer has to have a firearm on their side. It would be nice if police officers did not need a gun, but they do. Now a police officer must get good at shooting their gun, and also knowing the safety procedures of using their gun. They will have you shoot in combat situations, normally with a handgun and shotgun.

Now along with firearms, they are going to teach them pursuit driving. Driving a patrol car lends itself to situations that could backfire. A lot of rookie officers thing that their lights and sirens protect them, but in reality a lot of times other drivers do not pay attention. Since the job does require police officers to chase bad guys, they will have to be trained on driving obstacle courses and in high tense situations. A police officer that is not good behind the wheel, can become a liability the police department can not afford.

Now after a police recruit graduates, they have a whole host of opportunities that will present themselves. Now after a rookie officer proves themselves they can advance through the different ranks. They can also look at specialized units like, detective division, narcotics, traffic, vice, homicide, auto theft, and the list goes on and on. If you want to become a police officer in Nevada, now is the perfect chance to do it, and live your dream.
